#1. From Random Gift to Local Legend: The Shirt That Started a Conversation
“A couple years ago, I got matched with someone from a suburb of Baltimore in the hometown exchange. One of the gifts this person sent me was a T-shirt with a Maryland crab on it from a company called Route One Apparel.
Well, I am visiting Baltimore for the weekend and decided to bring the shirt. I was talking to someone local this evening and looks at my shirt and says – oh one of my friends’ kids designed that shirt! She started out selling shirts at high school football games and now she has her own company!
All this to say, thank you Gefter for giving me an interesting conversation piece!”
#2. Love is Blind… and Drunk Me Sends Flowers to My Ex!
“Dated a girl who was made of red flags, but I was wearing rose-coloured glasses, so we know how that goes. She was into some weird shit. Left me for a guy twice my age who put ice cubes places or something.
Anyway, I was drunk and sadboying on the old internet one night, decided to do something and immediately drunkenly forgot about it. Until the next day. I am at work talking with my friend. My phone goes off.
Oh, my FTD arrangement was delivered.
Did you send girls name flowers? I thought she dumped you.
She did and yes, I apparently did. Along with a get-well card.
Oh, is she sick?
No. Just crazy.”
3#. Petty Claus: How a 5-Cent Gift Shut Up My Greedy Cousin!
“This happened at a regular Family Christmas celebration with cousins I do not care about – I go out of obligation. We do white elephant/selfish Santa – the one where you can swap with someone and the gifts are anon.
The budget was $50 per person, and a bitchy cousin had whinged that people were not spending the exact amount – this was after the year that the item I got was RRP of $50, but on sale for $30.
So, the next year the gift I bought was $49.95, and I sticky taped a 5-cent coin to it, right next to the $49.95 price sticker. The bitchy cousin picked that gift – because it was big (I knew she would pick the biggest one, everyone else at least tried to not seem greedy). She doesn’t know I bought it, but she knew it was a dig at her when she saw the 5 cents. Shut her up for the next few years, and then she moved across the country and doesn’t make it over for Christmas much.”
4# When You Buy Your Own Christmas Present and Still Get Surprised!
“Last year, I impulse-bought a pack of canvases that were on sale at an art store. I love to paint, so I bought them while shopping for supplies to make Christmas presents for my family. I threw them into the trunk of my car (which I rarely use) and told my mom when I got home.
She was upset and said that I could have told her I wanted canvases so she’d have something else to wrap for me (I like the pleasure of just unwrapping something on Christmas). I shrugged and told her she could wrap the ones in my car since I’d probably forget about them anyway.
So she did. I forgot completely about them and on Christmas, there was a heavy present that said – To Kipsy, from Santa. I assumed that meant it was a big ticket present as there was always one and this one was heavy. And , of course, despite being 22, I still assumed heavy meant expensive.
The look on my face as I unwrapped the canvases and slowly remembered their existence was priceless. I remember my mom laughing so hard, she could barely breathe. My dad and my sister were confused. It was probably my favourite present of the year, just because of the way it made my mom laugh. I LIVE for that kind of thing.
One of my favourite Christmas memories and I’ve been urging my mom to do it again this year.”
#5. The Tradition of Tat: How My Grandmother Turned Junk into a Priceless Gift
“For my 18th Christmas my grandmother got me a stocking full of – crap.
Old broken toys, a pencil sharpener long blunted, pencil stubs, basically think what you’d find at the back of a drawer.
The story goes my late uncle when he was 18 got outraged, he did not get a Christmas stocking. My Grandmother had thought he would feel too old for one, so hadn’t bothered.
My Grandmother was a lady of culture, a fantastic cook, and a wicked little Witt when she chose.
So she went through their drawers and back of shelves and found the most tat she could. Wrapped each in spare wrapping paper and stuffed his old stocking.
That evening presented his gift as an apology.
Like my uncle had then, I unwrapped my gifts and threw each piece of wrapping at her as I laughed my head off.
Like she had with my uncle, she laughed to tears at my reaction.
She then gave me some chocolates and a book and told the story.
I wrapped everything back up and still have the stocking.
And if I ever have kids, when they reach their 18th Christmas, I’ll have a special stocking for them.”
#1. Towel Warmer
My das is always cold when he sleeps. Another idea that I got for my dad is a weighted heating pad. He puts it on his feet when he gets in bed. I use one too sometimes when my feet just can’t get warm when I’m in bed.
#2. Magazine subscription
Magazine subscription, wool or cashmere socks, eye mask, portable speaker, high quality spices or olive oils, electric wine opener, wine aerator, coffee or cocktail syrups, decanter, book light, food chopper, rice cooker, mug warmer, portable steamer, or insulated lunch box!
#3. Toaster Tongs
Haha I gave toaster tongs to my husband in his stocking last year. He was using a knife to get his English muffin out of the toaster and I was sure he was going to get zapped one day. We use the tongs every day!
#4. Personalized comic
I would like to gift a one-page, 3-5 panel comic for my boyfriend. He’s very into Spider-Man and I’d like to incorporate his dog as a sidekick into the story.
#5. Puzzle Book
I am currently trying to decrease my screen time and I thought a puzzle book might be a good idea.
#6. Non-Commercial items
NTA. As a parent, I always loved the written notes, drawings, paintings, and non-commercial items of love that my children gave me. Something you create means so much to a loving parent, especially when they know you put effort into it because you love them. Go with your heart on this one, it is in the right place.
#7. Subscription as a Gift
I got a six-month Olfactif subscription as a gift. It was fun and I ended up buying one full bottle – ELdO Hermann a Mes Cotes – but probably more than half were duds, and there were a fair number of repeat houses from month to month. It seems like they balance it out cost-wise by including some cheaper stuff along with more rare expensive gems. I didn’t reup after six months but it was a fun gift.
#8. Personalized Bobblehead
My wife got custom bobble head made for me, including her baby bump, our two derpy cats, and of course Dodgers jerseys.
#9. Scanning Old Photos
Best gift I gave was probably scanning all my family’s old photos so we would be sure they wouldn’t get ruined or go missing. Not really sure if that’s a Christmas gift, though. I would’ve done it anyway.
#10. blanket with Name
One of my favourite gifts received a few years ago is a really soft, fluffy blanket with my last name embroidered in the corner. I love a good, cozy blanket and the fact that it is personalized is so special!
